Passing By
“I never quite decided just what was passing by: the window, the furniture, or the clouds”, said the Professor. “But the point of it all, in my mind, are the vases. You know I’m a collector of unique pottery.”

“Well, I was with my friend, the well-known Chinese porcelain artist Cheng Yiting, as we traveled from Shanghai to NYC, in 1940. I convinced him to drop by Mondrian’s studio (they were mutual fans) and sneak a sketch or two of whatever was laying around. I later commissioned C. Y., as liked to call him, to fashion me some vases inspired by the sketches. He exchanged the lovely results for a few rare Trifokalis treasures. The porcelain vases look nothing like these.”
